Following last season's heavy snow falls and increased avalanches, the Austrian state of Vorarlberg has been looking at ways to improve safety for boarders and skiers while they're off piste.
After discussions with tourism groups, ski guides, lift operators and mountain rescue groups, a six point plan was agreed on that puts the responsibility on snowsport participants, but also provide more information on conditions. The main point was the need to prevent skiing through woods and increase fines for anyone that breaks the rules or doesn't stick to the marked routes.
These measures are aimed at ensuring that everyone stays safe on the slopes, both season workers and tourists.
